Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Review

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Review

RPG fans looking for something other than the standard "boy meets girl, boy loses girl in heart-wrenching cutscene, boy avenges girl’s death and saves world" formula should definitely give Persona 2 a shot.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is an underrated masterpiece.

An analysis, pseudo-review, and a story of how I fell in love with Persona. In this video I analyze the characters, themes, gameplay, and art of Persona 2 Eternal Punishment. I wanted to make a video essay on how Persona 2 changed my life and how it changed my view on video games as a whole. All love to Megaten, Atlus, and the developers of this game.

This video contains major spoilers for Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. As well as spoilers on the final bosses of Persona 3, 4, and 5; albeit only in the Opinion & Personal Experience segment.

EDIT: At 51:20 the song played was copyrighted so Youtube tried to remove it while still leaving my voice in. This resulted to a muffled sound and I apologize for that. I’ll be careful with the songs I use next time.

The following video will contain spoilers for both Persona 2 Innocent sin as well as Persona 2 Eternal Punishment. I highly suggest you play Innocent Sin yourself or watch my video on the game to get extra context for my review of Eternal Punishment.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin is a good game overall. Sure, I think that the PSP remaster definitely butchered the combat mechanics to a large extent. But what kept me going through all of that was the game’s story and cast of characters. Innocent Sin ended on a sombre note. Despite our heroes’ best efforts, they couldn’t stop the world from being destroyed by Nyarlathotep. The only solution to this problem was to erase the group’s memories of meeting each other. By doing so, a new timeline is created where the events of Innocent Sin never happened. At the end of the day, it seems as though the childhood friends were destined to stay apart.
